Studio AKA: when the tech disappears and the artist takes over

ENVY is a multi-award-winning post-production facility with six locations in central London. The company boasts over 20 suites for offline/online editing, grading, sound, 2D and 3D VFX, and recently opened two new departments. ENVY has worked on a number of EMMY, BAFTA, RTS, Grierson, and D&AD winners, to name a few, and regularly collaborates on the popular shows Gogglebox, The Voice UK, and Top Gear.

We sat down with Daniel Sassen, CTO, and Jai Cave, Technical Operations Director, to learn how the company uses Z by HP and how the Z4 Rack, Z2, and Z Remote Boost products not only provide the core infrastructure for the facilities, but also form the foundation for ENVY Remote—a tool developed by ENVY that is a flexible editorial workflow solution.

Daniel explains that ENVY's challenge was to create a solution that could not only accommodate hundreds of remote employees, but also a hybrid solution that could easily transition between on-site employees and those coming to ENVY or working from home. They also needed a system that could scale easily—currently, ENVY Remote can handle the setup of 50 clients in one day.

Jai believes ENVY Remote is a truly unique marketplace, including tools like storyboards, live chat, notes, tasks, and the mobile apps, and, most importantly, is receiving enthusiastic feedback from users. He also believes flexibility is crucial now and that this is how we'll work long-term. He explains that the mail industry is changing, and companies need to consider how to adapt—warning that otherwise, they'll be left behind.
