Chaos Group has made major improvements to adaptive lighting and GPU rendering in V-Ray 3.5 for Maya.

Among the latest updates are improvements for look development, realistic 3D shadows in composite scenes, and the addition of resumable rendering, which enables users to stop and restart a render at any point.

For V-Ray 3.x users the latest update is completely free and can be downloaded from Chaos Group’s website. There’s also a bundle offer for users upgrading V-Ray 2 to 3.5 with Phoenix FD.

New features include

Resumable Rendering

Stop and resume our render at any point and pick up where you left off

Adaptive Lights

New algorithm speeds up rendering in scenes with multiple light sources

Instant Look Development

Look Development is more responsive with an improved Interactive Production Renderer (IPR)

On-demand Mip-mapping

Automatic texture sizing and loading fits larger, more detailed scenes into memory

A matte shadow catcher

Composite 3D scenes with realistic shadows onto background plates

Improved shading and reflections

Added support for the alSurface material for more accurate reflections and realistic skin

Lens distortion

Scenes can have realistic barrel or pincushion lens distortion

Cached irradiance maps

Use the CPU to pre-calculate global illumination and the GPU to render
