There’s been the usual debate round the office ahead of this year’s Oscars ceremony, but one gong is beyond contest – and not just because it’s already been awarded.

MARI wins a technical Oscar

On Saturday 13th February 2016, the engineers and designers behind MARI will be honoured with a Scientific and Engineering Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Recognising their “proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures”, an Academy Plaque will be presented to Jack Greasley, Kiyoyuki Nakagaki, Duncan Hopkins and Carl Rand in Beverly Hills (we’re not jealous).

We love MARI, and couldn’t be happier for the Foundry team. Still the industry leader in its field, this recognition is well earned. As the Academicians put it: “Combining powerful, multilayer painting tools and a unique texture-management system, MARI simplifies working with large, high-resolution texture sets. It has achieved broad adoption in the visual effects industry, often supplanting long-term in-house systems.”

We’ll raise a glass to that.
